Libreville

Loango National Park, the largest of thirteen, is situated in the southwest (just south of the equator) and protects a diverse coastal habitat, including parts of the 220 km² Iguéla Lagoon, the only West/Central-Africa lagoon ecosystem that is protected within a national park.

The 1,550 km² Loango National Park is a mosaic of grassland savannas, remote beaches, numerous types of forests, swamps, mangrove habitats and salt marshes, and is one of best examples of Gabon’s incredible biodiversity. The park offers breathtaking panoramas in every direction together with great possibilities to see many of the 200 mammal species and over 600 bird species found in the country.

In Loango National Park, there is opportunity to see forest elephants, forest buffalo, and red river hog among other rare wildlife against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean.

Day 03: Loango National Park (Gorilla Excursion)
After breakfast drive to the Max Planck Gorilla Habituation and Research Project. Depending on the location of the gorillas today, the trip will take upwards of 45-minutes. Enter the forest on foot following a team of Pygmy master-trackers, whose daily task it is to track the family of 18 western lowland gorillas including the mighty silverback.

Once contact is made with the gorilla group, observe them from close-up (10 meters). It is an incredible experience watching these great apes in their natural habitat doing what gorillas do. After spending an hour with the gorillas, visit the researchers’ Yatouga Base Camp either by walking or traveling a short distance by boat on the lagoon. At Yatouga enjoy light refreshments followed by a briefing about the gorillas and the ongoing research.

This afternoon go on a savanna Safari by vehicle; the savannas of Loango form an integral part of the park’s amazing ecosystem. Drive through extensive savannas with the opportunity to see all the usual animals in addition to rarely-seen wildlife such as forest sitatunga (marshbuck), leopard, chimpanzee & yellow-backed duiker. At sunset stop at the beach for a sundowner as you watch the sunset over the Atlantic.
Overnight at hotel.

Day 04: Loango National Park
After breakfast, go on an excursion to Tassi camp located in the savannah near to the ocean. Tassi is one of the last few places on earth where large mammals can still be seen roaming freely near or on the beach. Only in Gabon can hippos be seen swimming in the surf. Here, during the rainy season, buffaloes, monkeys, forest elephants and other species can often be found grazing on the coastal grasslands. On the rare occasion a family of gorillas may also be spotted foraging in the trees nearby. In turtle season (October to February), venture out at night with our expert guide to search for nesting marine turtles. In total, four species of marine turtles can be found nesting on Gabon’s beaches.
Overnight at hotel.

Day 05: Loango/Port Gentil/Libreville
After an early breakfast, go on a final safari or boat ride to see the aquatic animals. Depending on your flight time from Port Gentil, go on a morning safari either by boat or in a 4×4 before you depart by road to Port Gentil. On arrival in Port Gentil, enjoy refreshments, then board for the 30 minutes flight to Libreville. On arrival in Libreville, optional departure or overnight to enjoy what Libreville has to offer.

Visit the Musée des Arts et Traditions and learn about Gabon’s tribal culture and visit the popular Louis Quarter where the city’s stylish clubs, restaurants and bars are found.
